Ghana Recycling Project

P

lastic waste has emerged as a major environmental crisis worldwide, and Africa is particularly affected due to its limited waste management systems and rapid urbanization. Each year, the continent generates around 19 million tons of plastic waste, much of which ends up polluting the environment.

In Ghana, plastic waste is a leading contributor to pollution, with Accra alone producing roughly 300,000 tons annually. Alarmingly, less than 5% of this waste is recycled, while the rest clogs waterways, litter streets, or is incinerated, contributing to severe air pollution. According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), if current trends continue, the world’s oceans could contain more plastic than fish by weight by 2050.

IMPLEMENTERS, committed to social development, has joined forces with key partners—TrinamiX GmbH, Miniplast, and local plastic waste collectors—to take a collective stand against the plastic waste crisis. Together, they aim to introduce innovative recycling technologies and create a thriving market for recycled plastic products in Ghana and across Africa.

In Ghana, waste pickers carry out much of the recycling work informally. To support these individuals, IMPLEMENTERS, in collaboration with Miniplast and TrinamiX GmbH, has launched a project that provides training on proper plastic sorting techniques. Through this initiative, waste pickers across the country are gaining access to cutting-edge tools, such as TrinamiX’s Mobile Spectroscopy technology, which improves the efficiency and accuracy of sorting. This not only enhances the recycling process but also creates new jobs, offering an opportunity to uplift communities and improve livelihoods.
