CSRDevelopment Partnership
As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives and commitment to addressing the plastic waste crisis in Ghana, Unilever Ghana Plc launched the Plastics Series Campaign, an employee-focused campaign aimed at creating awareness in the fight against plastic pollution. This campaign featured sessions with experts and stakeholders who provided insights into the current situation, challenges and opportunities in plastics management, recycling, and plastics economics.
In alignment with this initiative, IMP was equally invited to contribute following one of IMP’s projects – Ghana Recycling Project (GRP), a project which began last year to address the pressing issue of plastic waste management and promote a sustainable waste ecosystem in Ghana. The GRP highlights the role of sensitization and leveraging technology in addressing these challenges.
Under this project, IMP has developed training modalities to educate on the different types of plastics, their features, and sustainable recycling methods. These modalities also include skills needed to effectively sort and process waste, enabling the production of higher-quality recycled material. IMP partnered with a German-based company, Trinamix, to support the technical aspect of this project. With technology such as the TrinamiX NIR Spectrometer, there is precise identification of the various plastic types for optimal sorting.
Additionally, the maiden edition of the GRP was executed in partnership with Miniplast, a local recycling organization. Building on this existing collaboration, IMP and Miniplast delivered a presentation during the Unilever plastic campaign titled From Waste to Wealth: Advancing the Recycling Economy. The presentation emphasized the below objectives:
- The significant impact of waste management on daily life, communities and the planet underscores the urgency of immediate action
- Provide practical, actionable steps individuals can take to contribute to the recycling economy
Through this involvement in the plastics series campaign, IMP continues to demonstrate its dedication to promoting sustainable waste management.
