Plastics and textiles are among the most common pollutants in Ghana, choking our drainage systems, littering our streets, and overwhelming our coastlines. Many of Ghana’s once-pristine beaches have become dumping grounds, with plastics, textiles, and other waste polluting the environment, harming marine life, threatening livelihoods, and contributing to the worsening climate situation in Ghana.
It was against this backdrop that IMPLEMENTERS, in partnership with Mayekoo, Miniplast, and a coalition of committed organisations, rallied together on 20th September 2025 for World Cleanup Day with a major beach cleanup exercise at Laboma Beach.

The exercise, which aligns with the IMP’s Climate Forward Summit, brought together hundreds of volunteers, activists, and community members who turned up to make a difference. From young people eager to take climate action, to participants from partner organisations, the exercise was fuelled by our shared goal to make Laboma Beach clean again. With lively music keeping spirits high, teams from Let’s Do It! Ghana, Zoomlion, the Rotary Club of Accra, Ghana Recycling Initiative of Private Enterprises, Ahaban, the High Commission of India, El-Sayus Company Limited, Jibu, Fafali, Ecozoil, UNIMAC, Beacon Heart Foundation, Laboma Beach Resort, the National Sports Authority, Rugby League Federation Ghana, Verna Mineral Water, Women for Sustainability Afrika, Ocean Tribe, and Future Stars Charity all joined hands with IMPLEMENTERS and Mayekoo to tackle waste head-on.

Armed with gloves, rakes, and determination, we cleared plastics, fabric, wood, and other waste strewn across the beach. With the combined effort of participants and the use of the Beach Rake, a total of eight full loads of debris, each weighing approximately 4,500 lbs, were hauled away, totalling over 16 metric tons of waste removed in a single day. More than just numbers, this achievement not only restored beauty to the coastline but also demonstrated the power of collective action in tackling Ghana’s pollution challenge.
To reinforce this effort and ensure sustainable waste management beyond the day, IMPLEMENTERS, together with Miniplast, donated five waste bins to be distributed across local communities. These bins will serve as a constant reminder and a practical tool to encourage proper waste disposal, prevent future pollution, and inspire everyday climate action.

This initiative showcases the extraordinary power of partnerships and community action in tackling one of Ghana’s most urgent environmental challenges. For us at IMPLEMENTERS, this exercise is a reflection of our unwavering commitment to building a climate-resilient Ghana by turning awareness into action and uniting diverse stakeholders.
